Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Dr. Mostafa Elhilali, a gifted
urologist, philanthropist, a dear friend and a colleague. Dr. Elhilali died on April 29, 2017 during
the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons Meeting, in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Dr. Elhilali was born in Egypt on November 3, 1937. He received his medical degree from Cairo
University in 1959 and completed his urology training in Egypt. He came to Montreal, Canada
where he completed his PhD degree in 1965 at the McGill University and obtained his Royal
College certification in 1969. In 1975, he was appointed the Chair of Urology at the Centre
Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke. He returned to McGill University in 1982 as Professor and
Chairman of the Division of Urology. At McGill, he held the position of Director of the Division of
Urology from 1982 to 2004, and also Director of the McGill University Urology Training Program
from 1983 to 1992. In this position, he built a very strong clinical and research program that had
a major impact on the career of hundreds of urologists.

Canada in 1999. Under his leadership the SIU expanded its activities, with annual meetings, a
fellowship programme and various educational and training programmes around the world. He
became President of the SIU from 2007 to 2009.

Dr. Elhilali was active in many organizations, but the SIU and its
Foundation were very close to his heart. He currently served as
the President of the SIU Foundation. He worked tirelessly to make
other people's lives better. Nothing brought him more pleasure
than to teach and train aspiring urologists from the developing
world and to help those most in need.
|
Dr. Elhilali was a brilliant urologist with a passion for medicine,
and a commitment to his patients, his colleagues and the SIU.
Indeed, he has made legendary contributions to education, and
innovations in surgery and urology at large.
