The 2020 UCSF-SIU Research Fellowship

Eligible: Fully-trained urologists from Africa.

The California Urology Foundation, in association with the Société Internationale d’Urologie, is pleased to announce the availability of a Urology Research Fellowship for a fully-trained urologist from Africa to perform research for one year in a medical laboratory of the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).


Since this award is intended to prepare the candidate for an academic career in his or her home country, a firm commitment to return will be a material consideration in the evaluation of candidates. This fellowship carries a stipend of US$ 50,000, of which $14,000 is used to cover medical insurance and administration fees.


Applications for this fellowship will be evaluated by a joint SIU/UCSF Committee and must include a proposed urology research project, a detailed CV, and 3 professional references. References must be received for a candidate to be considered.

UMN-SIU Leo Fung Memorial International Pediatric Fellowship

Eligible: Pediatric urologists, surgeons, and nurse practitioners with an M.D. qualification, an academic appointment in their home country.

The University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) and the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU) have established an international pediatric fellowship to be held at the University of Minnesota (UMN).  The training will be provided through the Pediatric Urology service at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital.

  1. The UMF will provide the funds to cover travel costs and University-selected housing for a three-month Pediatric Fellowship. In addition to travel and housing costs, an honorarium of $3000.00 will also be provided. This may be subject to tax depending on current tax treaties and/or laws;
  2. The Fellowship will be known as the UMN-SIU Leo Fung International Pediatric Fellowship;
  3. The Fellowship will be available to qualified Urologists/General Surgeons from developing countries with an interest in Pediatric Urology who wish to obtain additional training as an observer;
  4. The award is intended to enhance the candidate’s exposure to pediatric urology and enable improved delivery of pediatric urology care in his or her home country; a firm commitment to return will be a material consideration in the evaluation of candidates;
  5. As the goal of the fellowship is to establish active modern pediatric urology practices in the home country, the fellow will be expected to continue to interact with the Pediatric Urologists at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital following completion of their fellowship. Such interactions could include teleconferences, video conferences, or collaborative projects. Interactions could also involve exchange visits by U of M Pediatric Urologists to the fellow’s institution to provide more hands on training in the "home" environment;
  6. It is anticipated that the fellowship will lead to continued interaction with the fellow after his/her return to their home country. The interaction could also be the in form of future collaborative work by UMN physicians at the fellow’s home institution. The feasibility of ongoing collaboration to help develop and/or enhance the pediatric urology program at the fellow’s home institution will be considered while prioritizing applications;
  7. Applications will be submitted to UMN-SIU Leo Fung Memorial International Pediatric Fellowship, c/o SIU Central Office and should contain a statement of purpose for seeking the fellowship (including a commitment to return to the home country), a recommendation letter from the immediate supervisor at the home institution, a detailed CV and professional references;
  8. The application deadline is at least 6 months in advance of the intended start date;
  9. Applications received will be jointly evaluated by the SIU and by UMN;
  10. The Fellowship will be held at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital and other affiliated sites; and
  11. UMN will notify the selected candidate and will arrange the administrative and financial details of the visit.
